Your kids are home for whatever reason (holiday break, snow day, summer vacation), which means that they will be asking for snacks . . . a lot. Every time they ask for snacks, don’t give them a bag of chips and a sugary soda, instead whip them up something healthy that both of you can enjoy.

We know you’re busy, don’t worry these snacks don’t take long to make, so your kids can be back to slaying imaginary dragons or having a tea party with princesses in no time at all.

One of the biggest factors in managing diabetes or preventing it is a healthy balanced diet. But in today’s busy society, it can be difficult to eat healthy when you’re trying to juggle numerous responsibilities. A key advantage to eating healthy with diabetes is that this will help you keep your diabetes well managed, which will allow you to be able to qualify for insurance for diabetics.

Here are a few healthy snack alternatives.

Popcorn

If your child is looking for a yummy treat to eat while they watch their favorite movie, pop them a bag of un-salted popcorn. One cup of popcorn (as long as you don’t cover it in salt and butter) is an excellent snack for your kids to enjoy, and they won’t even realize it’s a healthy snack. You can add a small amount of butter or salt to add an extra flavor.

Frozen Fruits

If you’re kids are looking for something a little sweeter, frozen fruit is an excellent option. While frozen fruit is a healthy option, still be aware of the amount of carbs and sugar in each fruit. Frozen blueberries and strawberries are a great option for a rainy day snack when your kids are trapped inside. If you want something extra, add a cup of non-fat yogurt for your kids to dip the fruit in.

Sweet Potato Chips / Fries

Instead of the greasy potato chips, buy (or bake your own) sweet potato chips. Sweet potato chips contain much less sugar, salt, and carbohydrates than their white potato counterparts. You can serve the sweet potato chips with sour cream or a small amount of ketchup. If you buy a bag of sweet potato chips, be sure to check the ingredients and nutrition facts on the bag.

If you have the time, you can cut your own sweet potatoes and make sweet potatoes fries. They are a great way to sneak a healthy snack into your kid’s day.

Apple / Bananas With Peanut Butter

Peanut butter is a healthy snack option for kids and adults. When buying your peanut butter, make sure you buy a jar that doesn’t have tons of added sugar or sweeteners. Spread peanut butter on whole-wheat crackers, banana slices, or apple slices, or a rice cake for a healthy and filling snack for your kids (you can enjoy some of it too).

Cheese and Crackers

String cheese is a great snack for your kids when you’re on the go! String cheese comes in a prepackaged wrapping that you can throw into a backpack, lunch bag, or in a purse. String cheese allows your kids to get extra protein while they enjoy a delicious snack. You can include a handful of whole-wheat crackers to go with the string cheese.

Veggies and Hummus

Veggies and humus is a snack that you can enjoy while you sneak veggies into your kids diet. ¼ a cup of hummus with cucumbers, broccoli, and carrots are a simple snack that will keep your kids happy while they play the day away. Hummus is higher in carbs than some snack foods, it is also high in fiber and has a nice amount of protein.
